Introduction
The Automatic Ether Injection System (AEIS) controls the injection of ether into the engine intake manifold during cold weather starting. Proper function of this electronically controlled system is required to prevent possible engine damage from occurring during cold-start conditions. AEIS is used on machines which have 3500 series engines. The AEIS has changed to include multi-point pressure sensing (MPPS). This function provides oil pressure monitoring which is related to engine speed. A low oil pressure warning signal is sent to the vehicle monitoring systems; Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) and Engine Overspeed Indicator (EOI). The MPPS function is independent from the injection of ether. The operation of EMS and EOI is not changed. They now recieve the low oil pressure warning signal from the AEIS instead of from an oil pressure switch. The multi-point pressure sensing (MPPS) function requires an oil pressure sensor to provide engine oil pressure information to the ether injection control. The ether injection control decides when to tell the vehicle monitoring systems that a low engine oil pressure warning condition exists. The harness code enables the MPPS function, on vehicles equipped with an engine oil pressure sensor. The description "with MPPS" and "without MPPS" are used throughout this manual: * "with MPPS" describes vehicles with the multi-point pressure sensing (MPPS) function. "with MPPS" vehicles use the 3E3778 Ether Injection Control with an engine oil pressure sensor.* "without MPPS" describes vehicles without the multi-point pressure sensing (MPPS) function. "without MPPS" vehicles use either the earlier 9X5303 Ether Injection Control or the 3E3778 without an engine oil pressure sensor.
Part No. Location Of Ether Injection ControlThe Part No., as described above, identifies the "with MPPS" or "without MPPS" capabilities. The part number and change level are stamped on the ether injection control. The 3E3778 Ether Injection Control replaces the 9X5303 Ether Injection Control. 3E3778 is capable of operating "with MPPS" or "without MPPS". The harness code determines whether the MPPS function is enabled or not. An earlier AEIS change occurred. This change increased the maximum engine coolant temperature at which manual operation is allowed. The maximum temperature increased from 30°C (85°F) to 65°C (150°F). 9X5303-00 through 9X5303-03 Ether Injection Controls specified 30°C (85°F). All other (later) ether injection controls specify 65°C (150°F).Component Locations
